Kelley and Sean’s Royal tour of Boston College

Kelley and Sean met at Boston College so it was the perfect place to do their engagement shoot. Even though it was a fairly chilly morning, Kelley showed up in a Royal blue wrap dress with a pair of killer heels and Sean was in a matching Royal blue sweater. She braved the cold and looked pretty as a princess. Luckily the warmth they feel for each other seemed to radiate from them, warming up the icy morning. By the end of the shoot it was positively gorgeous out! Kelley and Sean took me all over the campus showing me some of their favorite old haunts. I felt like I was being given the real Royal treatment! Sean was the ultimate gentleman holding every door. When Kelley and Sean posed for my camera they looked elegant and regal. Then once I got home and started to edit the shots I realized what might have given them that extra oomph of majesty…Kelley’s dress was a dead ringer for Kate Middleton’s engagement dress. Kate may be the Duchess of Cambridge, but Kelley and Sean were surely the King and Queen of Boston that day!

Marianne & Billy’s Newport Adventure

Marianne and Billy met one summer in Newport, Rhode Island. Newport is home to some of the most incredible mansions in the world, such as the Breakers, Marble House, and Rosecliff, as well as breathtaking views of the ocean. It holds so many special memories for the couple, who currently live in Connecticut, that they decided to do both their engagement shoot and their wedding there. Unfortunately, the day we picked for their shoot was during a late season Noreaster! But Marianne said she wasn’t afraid of doing the shoot with an umbrella. I told her that hopefully with the help of the wonderful architecture found in the many fabulous mansions in Newport, we would find enough covered spaces that we could be umbrella free. And sure enough we were! Not to mention Marianne and Billy’s wonderful sunny dispositions made up for any remaining gloominess the weather provided.

Yvonne and Mike: Dance Partners for Life

I met Yvonne and Mike at PJ and Stephanie’s super fun wedding last year. Mike is Stephanie’s best friend, and he gave such a heartfelt speech that he had me crying behind the lens. When Mike didn’t have me crying, he had me laughing. He and Yvonne were dancing the night away. A couple right after my own heart! They were one of the most in sync couples I’d ever seen. Just beyond perfect for each other. Mike’s mom, Roberta, took me a aside and told me that she thought he was going to propose to her soon. Well Roberta was right. Mike took Yvonne apple picking and proposed to her that fall. When I got the email from Mike asking me if I was available for their wedding I was thrilled. I’d had daydreams since Stephanie and PJ’s wedding of what Mike and Yvonne’s wedding might be like. Yvonne is a musician so I knew it would be filled with beautiful music and dancing. But it will also be filled with laughter. This couple can barely go a minute without cracking each other up, as you can see from our shots from their engagement shoot on Acorn street in Boston.

Marlo and Mike’s Big Italian Wedding

The first time I met Marlo and Mike, Marlo asked me if I had ever seen the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. My response was, “Of course! It’s one of my favorites!”. “Well our wedding is pretty much going to be just like that, only replace Greek with Italian.” After hearing that I wasn’t exactly sure how it would all play out. On the day of their wedding no one was running around with a bottle of windex, but Marlo’s dad Skip was definitely beaming just like Papa Portokalos as he walked Marlo down the aisle of the stunning Sacred Heart Church.

Both Mike and Skip work at the fabulous Fairmont Battery Wharf so it was the perfect location for Marlo to get ready and for us to do the big reveal. Mike gave me a tour of the venue in advance so that we could pick out the perfect spot for him to see Marlo for the first time. He pictured her coming down the grand staircase and I told him we’d be sure to make it happen. Shawn Black once again was my right hand man, second shooting the whole day. He brought out some awesome studio lighting gear for us to get some great dramatic staircase shots. Freddie Ta–or as I like to call him, the angle master–took a break from his busy MCAT studying schedule to assist and shoot for the first half of the day. After descending the stairs, Marlo said she was surprised to see Mike without a touch of his beloved Harley Davidson flair. Mike then proudly pulled up his pants leg to show off his special Harley Davidson dress socks. He figured that was a bit more wedding appropriate than a bandana.

Both Mike and Marlo’s families were so organized we were able to finish the family formals in record time making it possible for us to fit in a quick shot at the carousel just down the street. Then it was off to the church. Marlo and Mike were driven in a classic white Bentley by a FANTASTIC driver. He took care of Marlo as if she was his own daughter. Any bride and groom would be sooooo lucky to have him as a chauffeur on their wedding day!

Now everything was set for the wedding to begin. Little Leo, the 2-year old ring bearer, was filled with joy…and energy. He ran all the way down the aisle by himself with smile from ear to ear…and then ran all the way back up it. Everyone was in stitches. And then in what seemed like a blink, Mike and Marlo were married. Upon exiting the church they were greeted by many of Marlo’s students and confetti canons in the North End’s beautiful North square that was full of spring time tulips and other well wishers. The day was capped off with their reception at Spinelli’s elegant lake-side venue in Lynnfield. Their on-site coordinator Suzanne was wonderful to work with and always kept Shawn and I abreast of what was going to happen next. All in all it was a fantastic day. Congratulazioni a Marlo e Mike!

Marlo & Mike’s Engagement Shoot was a Walk in the Park with Enzo

The very first time I met Marlo and Mike they mentioned how much they loved their dog Enzo and were sad that they couldn’t include him in their wedding. Being a dog lover myself I suggested that we could at least incorporate him into their engagement shoot at Christopher Columbus Park. Marlo and Mike loved the idea and surprised me that day with Enzo dressed to the nines in a doggy tux.

After doing a series of shots with Enzo we decided to do some shots of just Marlo and Mike together. We soon realized that we probably should have done these shots first rather than second as they were now covered in Enzo hair. Knowing this was a real possibility Marlo and Mike came prepared with a lint roller and a good sense of humor. About 20 sheets of lint rolling paper later the two were ready for their close ups.

Ali and Andrew – Partners for Life

A few months back Ali and Andrew were guests at Linda and Jon’s wedding. I could tell right then and there that they were perfect for each other. A few months later, Andrew made it official and proposed to Ali in a slightly unconventional way. Right after Andrew ordered the ring online, he just couldn’t wait even another minute to propose…even though he didn’t have the ring in hand. So what did Andrew do? He walked out to Ali with his laptop and got down on one knee and proposed with the picture of the ring in tow. A truly modern proposal right? Andrew’s modern proposal was really quite fitting as they are also a very modern couple. The two of them have started their own health and wellness coaching business, Engin Coaching. So Ali and Andrew are real partners for life in every sense of the meaning.

For their engagement shoot they picked out the adorable Coolidge Corner area where they love to go see independent films at the vintage Coolidge Corner Theater. We had tons of fun stopping by their favorite local haunts. In the end I think the cool vibe of the Theater rubbed off on me while I was processing their images. My favorites from the day feel like screen grabs from a movie to me.

Kelli and Andi’s Elopement at the Samuel Sewall Inn

I am always honored when a couple asks me to photograph their wedding. To be part of a couple’s incredibly special day is so amazing. Each and every wedding leaves a beautiful indelible mark on my memory. Usually I’m part of an army of wedding vendors along with friends and family that help to make the day. In the case of Kelli and Andi’s elopement at the Samuel Sewall Inn, it was the Justice of the Peace and me, and the intimacy of the ceremony made the experience even more special for me.

At first I was a bit nervous as it was the first same-sex wedding I would be covering and the girls had flown in from Colorado, so the first time I met them was the day of the ceremony. Any jitters I had quickly left upon meeting Andi and Kelli since they were so sweet and welcoming. They felt more like old friends than brand new clients. Susan Wilson officiated a touching ceremony in their room at the Samuel Sewall Inn, which the girls decorated with a lovely bouquet. Kelli could hardly contain her excitement during the ceremony, by the end she was bouncing in place in anticipation of their first kiss as a married couple. Their joy was palpable and I couldn’t hold back the tears. It was so wonderful to see a couple so genuinely thrilled to be married. I can still hear Kelli saying to Andi, “You are my wifey now! I have a WIFEY NOW!” Andi’s ear to ear smile was contagious. After the ceremony we went outside for a quick shoot in the surprisingly beautiful weather for early February. As we walked along the streets of Brookline we ran into several local residents that congratulated the girls on their marriage. This was a perfect end to a perfect day for Andi and Kelli. Congratulations girls! Thank you for giving me a day I will never forget!

There’s a real spark between them: Erica and Zach’s engagement shoot at the Museum of Science

A few months ago wedding planner extraordinaire, Holly Fawcett of In the Pink Ink Events, mentioned to me that she had a sweet couple that she thought would mesh well with me. Was she ever right! I was so pumped when Erica and Zach choose Boston’s Museum of Science for their engagement shoot location to embrace their shared love of science and to avoid the colder temperatures Boston provides in the winter. Science museums are like second homes to me because I still love science and as a high school student one of my favorite past times was volunteering at my local children’s science museum. This was going to be a shoot to remember!

During my first meeting with Erica, she told me from the very first day she and Zach met in medical school, there was a real spark between them. In the museum’s theater of electricity we captured shots of more than a few sparks actually between them! But even when we left that exhibit, the electricity between the two of them as a couple was still palpable. Erica and Zach had such a natural chemistry together it made my job as easy as Pi.

Dancing with the Dancing Photographer: Webisode #3 Spins & Turns

Happy New Year and Happy Wed-Dance-Day to you all! Over the years whenever a groom has confessed to me his worries about the first dance, the advice I always give them is the same: really all a girl wants is to be spun. I don’t know why we like it so much, but we REALLY do! If a guy can execute a few simple turns on the dance floor, he is golden! The genuine smiles that will come upon his bride’s face as a result will be priceless in the wedding pictures. This week Peter walks us through how to do four different types of spins and turns: 1) outside turn, 2) inside turn, 3) turn from cuddle position, and 4) roll out turn. For HD viewing, after clicking play, click on the 360p button and switch to 720pHD.

Getting these turns right may take some practice so be sure to try them out a few times before your big day. Ladies remember nice graceful hands and to let HIM lead you into the turns and don’t just start to spin on your own. This will make sure that BOTH of you look like you know what you are doing. Guys, before you spin her outside of the basic dance frame, make sure there is enough room for the move to ensure you aren’t bashing your bride into your wonderful wedding guests.
