Marlo and Mike’s little bundle of joy

A little over a year ago I was honored to shoot Marlo and Mike’s wedding.  Soon after their wedding Marlo and Mike found out they were pregnant with their first child.  When I heard, I was thrilled for them and offered to do an in-home newborn shoot.  I loved doing this shoot so much that now all Fucci’s Photos brides receive a complimentary in-home newborn session for their first born child.  It was so wonderful seeing the full evolution of one of my couples from engaged, to newlyweds, to loving parents of their sweet baby, Domenic.

From the day he was born, Domenic had a full head of hair and had his eyes wide open to the world.  He was one of the most alert 2-month-olds I’ve ever seen.  Marlo spiked his hair up for the shoot to show off just how much hair he has.  I had done a newborn shoot before, but Domenic was my first 2-month-old subject.  What a difference 2 months can make!  He was far more active and roly-poly than my newborn subjects.  It made for a completely different shooting experience.  Newborns can pretty much be put into whatever position you’d like (within reason, safety is always the most important thing!), but a 2-month-old can squirm out of just about any pose you get him into.  So we were at the whim of little Domenic that day.

I was determined to still get detail shots of his little feet and hands.  It took a bit more time, but eventually we got them.  Then at the end of the session I invited Marlo and Mike to be part of the picture.  Domenic was starting to get tired and was ready for a nap, so the time was ripe for Mike to rock the little one to sleep. Domenic completed his trip to dreamland with the help of a binky and Marlo’s warm embrace.   The joy on her face and the light from the window that highlighted it brought a tear to my eye.  It was just so beautiful.  During this shoot I was 3 months pregnant, and seeing this lovely vision of motherhood before me just made me sooooooo excited to get to be a mom soon.  We finished the session with a little family portrait with Mike behind Marlo, caressing little Domenic’s head. I was so glad we got to take a shot with all three of them since it is rare for new parents to get shots with their baby with both of them in it since the other one is usually on the other side of the camera.  Congratulations Marlo and Mike, and thank you for sharing your bundle of joy with all of us!

Lauren and Erikk’s Engagement Shoot at Duxbury Beach

Lauren and Erikk have known each other for quite some time.  Ok, let’s be really honest, a long, LONG, time! They met all the way back in 5th grade.  Even though Erikk subsequently went to many different schools the two remained friends.  As time went by they realized they’d be perfect together as more than friends.  This was a couple after my own heart, as my husband and I didn’t start dating until over 7 years after we first met back in college.  Spending time with these two you can see how they really are soul mates as well as best friends.  Erikk and Lauren choose beautiful Duxbury Beach for the site of their engagement shoot.  Unfortunately, the New England weather wasn’t doing us any favors that day.  It was windy and cold, but the two were troopers.  At first they tossed their parkas in the car, but with a half mile walk on a bridge across the water I knew they would be missing their warm downy jackets, and suggested that they grab them and that we just take them off for the shots.  Not even 100 feet from their car, the wind began to howl, and the parkas quickly went back on.  Making sure my couples are as comfortable as possible during as shoot is paramount.  Be it them being warm enough or cool enough depending on the situation, because if they aren’t comfortable it will show in their photos.  When they are comfortable, they can relax and be themselves.

Lauren made a wonderful Pinterest board full of inspiration and shared it with me prior to the engagement shoot.  This was very helpful as it really solidified what style of poses they were looking for, allowing us to be able to get them nailed down quickly so that they wouldn’t have to be popsicles for any longer than necessary.  She had pinned a variety of shots from my own engagement portfolio and re-pinned poses from several other Pinterest boards.  If you are looking for ideas, Pinterest is definitely a fantastic place to start.  We ended their shoot with a cute series of little messages involving scrabble tiles and Lauren’s engagement ring.  The two brilliantly had picked out all the letters they would need in advance and put them in a ziplock bag instead of bringing the whole velveteen bag of scrabble tiles.  With their excellent preparation we were able to get all the shots they wanted and at the same time had lots of fun taking them.  The hardest part of the shoot was to get this amorous pair to stop smooching for even a shot or two.  Barely a pose would go by without the two getting in at least a little kiss.  Usually I have to remind couples to hold kisses  longer for a great kiss shot, but in Lauren and Erikk’s case, I have no doubt this will not be a problem for them on their wedding day.

Chris and Patty’s Electric Connection: Engagement session on the Boston Esplanade

Patty and Chris

A few weeks before Christmas I received an email from Cheryl, whom I had the pleasure of meeting  (and dancing with) back at Angela and Dave’s wedding. She wanted to do something special for her son Chris and his fiancé Patty to celebrate their engagement.  So we put together a gift certificate for an engagement shoot.  It was an unusual shoot for me as I usually have met my couples in advance at a consultation before I get to do a session with them.  But Patty and Chris were comfy in front of the camera right from the get go.  The two had such an electric connection between the two of them, it was next to impossible to get a bad shot of these two love birds.  I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised by the spark between them, after all, Chris is an electrician. Chris was so incredibly romantic, tender and sweet with Patty, and you could see in Patty’s eyes how much she adores Chris.  I love in one of the shots on the stairs how she looks blissfully happy in his arms, even though it was about 30 degrees out and windy.

Patty choose Boston’s beautiful Esplanade and Longfellow Bridge for their shoot, as she takes that bridge to work every day and loves the view.  After our session…so do I!  What a fantastic location it was!  Clear shots of the Prudential Center and Hancock Tower, the beautiful Charles River below.  This is definitely one of my favorite locations to shoot in the city now.    We ended the shoot with a pinterest inspired shot.  Patty had an ampersand symbol with her so that they could do a Mr. & Mrs. shot.  They braved the cold and switched to shirts with the Anastasi Electric Corporation logo on them.  Patty is so excited to get to be his partner in life, as well as in Chris’ business, she wanted to make sure they had a shot of the two of them in the new company shirts.  I loved it!

Shoot notes:

  • Patty wore a lovely brand new white coat for the shoot.  You’ll notice though in some of the shots we are sitting down.  To ensure my clients’ clothes stay clean for the entirety of the shoot I wear a washable lightweight scarf that when I take it off can double as a barrier between their clothes and the things I have them sitting on or leaning up against.  After the shoot is done the scarf goes into the wash, and comes out like new ready for its next adventure in the city.
  • On the day of the shoot it was very windy.  Luckily Patty had remembered to bring a headband with her.  I try to remind all my clients to have a hairband on hand for their engagement session.  I always have a hair tie on my wrist just in case, but a pretty headband photographs much better than a wind-swept pony tail.
  • Patty also had her nails done.  This is a great idea for your engagement shoot. Your photographer will likely want to prominently display your beautiful engagement ring in several shots.  Having your nails done will eliminate any worries you might have of your hands not looking their best.  For color choices, I usually suggest a traditional french manicure, or classic colors so that later on the photos won’t look too dated when say the neon trend is back out of fashion.
  • Some of my clients end up getting poses named after them.  Angela came up with a trick on the fly during their engagement shoot that I use almost every time.  To mimic the look of a piggy back ride without the guy nearly being choked in the process have the girl stand on a bench just behind him, and then place her arms around his neck.  The key is to get their eyes in the same plane of focus, so the girl has to come forward over the guy’s shoulders.  So I tend to call that set up the “Angela”.  During Chris and Patty’s shoot, Patty made the fabulous suggestion of showing off her ring by placing her hands lovingly on Chris’ face.  It was perfection!  So Patty, you can be proud to know you’ve joined the ranks with Angela,  you now have your very own pose named after you.

So glad their lives drifted together: Caitlyn and Rob’s Cape Cod Engagement Session

When it comes to engagement shoots, I usually suggest that a couple picks a place that is special to them for one reason or another.  Caitlyn and Rob live in an adorable part of Cape Cod and choose to do their engagement shoot close to home on one of their favorite beaches.  The location was particularly meaningful to them since one of their favorite past times is taking long walks on the beach.  While on these walks the pair look for beautiful pieces of driftwood.   Super romantic right?

To help plan their wedding, Caitlyn has diligently followed the knot’s 12-Month wedding planning countdown.   This is normally a great idea as it helps you get everything done in a timely manner and helps decrease your stress when planning a wedding.  So when it said get engagement shots 6 months before your wedding, that’s when she decided to schedule the engagement shoot.  What the knot’s countdown couldn’t account for was New England’s crazy winters.  Some years you’d be in light sweaters in February, and other times in parkas.  The day of their shoot was one of those days that a parka was in order.  There were over 40mph winds and a wind chill of -7 degrees!  Even in this freezing weather Rob was still a good sport and got out there and tried to keep Caitlyn warm during our session.  In between set ups we all ran back to the car to warm up.

After we had all turned into popsicles I suggested we head back to their place for a quick indoor session so that we could get a few more relaxed shots.  There I got to see some of the amazing artwork Rob has created with some of the driftwood they have collected.  I particularly liked this session because it brought out the different sides of the couple.  The sweet and passionate side, as well as the side that comes out most of the time…cracking each other up at nearly every turn.  We ended the shoot with a little portrait session of Caitlyn.  Her eyes were just so intensely beautiful that day I couldn’t keep myself from taking a few shots of her.  Last but not least, I grabbed a few shots of Caitlyn’s lovely engagement ring placed on one of their favorite pieces of driftwood.  After seeing the shots, the two decided it would be great to include pieces of driftwood into their wedding decor as well.  I can’t wait to shoot their wedding this summer when it will be sunny and warm out, which will compliment their warm personalities as well as their beautiful DIY beach inspired centerpieces…far better than the snow and ice we found on the beach during their engagement shoot!

Tips to remember: Just because a countdown calendar suggests engagement shoots 6 months prior to your wedding doesn’t mean you have to follow it to the letter.  If you are using the shots for Save-the-Dates, it is a good idea to have this shoot done at least 6 months prior to your wedding.  This way you’ll have time to get them printed out and sent out early enough for them to be useful to your guests.  If you aren’t using them for Save-the-Dates then you can be much more flexible with your schedule for an engagement shoot.  I often suggest about 6 weeks to 2 months before the wedding so that you still have enough time to order prints if you’d like to use them for a guestbook or matted signing portrait, but still close enough that what you learned during the engagement shoot will still be fresh in your mind during your wedding.  For locations, while natural light is always wonderful, being freezing can put a real damper on your engagement shoot.  So if you need to schedule your engagement session during winter, consider looking into some indoor locations that are close to your outdoor location of choice to have in reserve in case it just gets too cold to be comfortable.

From Blind Date to Wedding: Gretchen and Brian’s Engagement session in Beacon Hill

As perfectly matched as Gretchen and Brian are you’d likely be pretty surprised that they met on a blind date.  Neither one usually went for that type of thing but their friends were sure that the two would hit it off.  Gretchen watched the door of the restaurant nervously for what her friends had in store for her.  When Brian entered, she thought to herself, “No way am I THAT lucky, if only my date was THAT guy!” But she was THAT lucky! To her astonishment the maitre d’ showed Brian to her table. Gretchen and Brian hit it off perfectly, keeping each other in stitches the whole night. The two have been keeping each other laughing ever since.  I was connected with this pair through a previous Fucci’s Photos bride, Kim, who is a co-worker with Gretchen.  Like Kim and Chris, Gretchen and Brian will be getting married at the beautiful Red Lion Inn, in Cohasset.  When Gretchen and Brian went in late 2012 to book this popular venue they were given the option of a date in 2014 or April 12, 2013.  The April date meant they’d have less than six months to plan their wedding, but 2014 just seemed too far away, so they took the plunge and choose the earlier date.  I assured Gretchen at our first consultation that this was the right decision as my husband and I faced a similar decision when picking our wedding date in 2009 and couldn’t be happier with our decision.    Without a doubt, planning for a full scale wedding in less than 6 months isn’t the norm, but when done in as organized and calm a fashion as Gretchen did, it is not only possible, but it can actually be less stressful than having over a year to plan.  You just don’t have the time to worry about all the little details that often stress out so many brides.

For their engagement session Brian and Gretchen wanted quintessential Boston, so we headed to Acorn Street in Beacon Hill.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the light on that street is just magic.   You couldn’t ask for better!  Gretchen warned me in advance that Brian had a bad case of the “Chandler Smiles” and wasn’t a big fan of getting his picture taken.  Anyone who was ever a fan of Friends knows what those haunting words mean.  I promised her that I had dealt with many a “Chandler” before and told her to assure Brian that the shoot would be painless.  The key is to make the shoot as natural as possible.  Normally a groom-to-be gets a natural smile on their face when looking at their bride-to-be.  So instead of having them pose with big “CHEESE!” grins on their faces like you’d ask a 4-year-old to do, instead let them be in their element.  Let them enjoy cuddling with their beautiful fiance.  Finding a private spot without any onlookers can really help many grooms get more relaxed.  At the very end of our session on Acorn Street I briefly let out a “Hey Brian, over here”.  Caught totally off guard he looked over towards me, still with his natural smile in tact. Within about 2 snaps, the Chandler Smile overtook his face.  Luckily Gretchen knew in advance that I would use this little trick, so she knew to turn as well.  So in the end we nabbed a shot with the two of them having great smiles together.  Once we had everything done Brian told me that the shoot was so much easier than he thought it would be and it was actually fun.  I was thrilled…another photo shoot convert. I told him the wedding day photos would actually be just as easy, if not easier, because on that day it’ll be next to impossible to wipe the natural smile off his face.
